To product or not to product ...

7/5/2013

I had alot going on today.  First, we picked up the trailer.  It is now ready for the trip to Louisiana.  Then Mom and I took Uncle Shoat's old saddle out of the barn where it was going to waste and getting ruined and took it to have it fixed up so that it will be a showcase piece in our living room.  The lady who is working on it for us, is going to take payments, so that is a good thing,  Mom says I will have it for years to come and can remember Uncle Shoat forever.  I guess I should have said that Uncle Shoat won the saddle at the Ben Johnson Steer Roping event in 1955 only two years after Ben Johnson Started holding them.  Oh and I guess I should have asked if anyone knew that Ben Johnson, the actor, was actually a rodeo star before he was an actor??  My Dad's side of the family were friends with him through out most of his cowboy days.  I think it is kind of cool but I never really knew Ben Johnson.  It is just like the fact that My Dad has roped with George Straits in a team roping back when they both were little kids.  And The Mcentire's were friends of my Dad's family and they all did cattle round ups together each summer.  Yes, Reba the singer.  Her brother Pake was a pallbearer at Uncle Shoat's funeral.  I think it is all cool but to be honest I have never met any of them.
Anyway, we are getting the saddle fixed up and it will be mine when my Dad passes on.  I actually learned to ride in that saddle.  Okay, Moving on.  The rest of the day was spent trying to deal with this ...

Well, There are three spools of it ... Look at the colors ... One is cored with White, one with grey and one with browns.  They all look so different and I do like the way they looks and I was going to make dog leashes out of it but now I don't know.  Mom says I should still do it but I am thinking that I could sell each spoon and save myself the time and energy if people don't like them.  I am going to make Mom a leash because I promised but I was going to make them right there in our booth at Fiber Christmas so I would have something different for people to see and buy but now I am just not sure.  If I make them all into leashes or leads and then they don't sell what would I do with all of them???  I guess I am just scared to take a chance.  After all Southdown leads and leashes are one of a kind items ... Right??
Last year I look three spools of core spun rug yarn and sold out in about 30 minutes.  So I am sure I can sell it without making the leads and leashes but I was thinking I needed to bring something new to the fiber festival.  Here is a picture of Mom's lead... So what does everyone think?  Do I make the leads or sell it without making it into a product???

I think, I want one. I'd love to hear more about the product: fiber content, construction, durability, benefits of having this type of lead/leash. But my first thought is, "I like that a lot; I want one."

Fiber is wool. These leads are made from my southdown sheep. They are a 4 ply construction, and under normal conditions work great for all size dogs as well as horses, sheep and cattle.

I like your lead very much. How about doing half and half if you're not sure? Make some to sell, and keep a whole spool in case someone wants to buy one.

I think that is what we might do ...

However Mom says I am not going to be allowed to tie one to the back of the truck and tractor and see when it breaks ... she says there is no need to destroy it to find out when it breaks ... LOL She really isn't any fun at all is she???
