Roping Clinic done Wrong

4/20/2013

Okay so this morning went nothing like it was suppose to.  If  you remember I had the roping clinic that we put on each year.  I was suppose to get chores done and then take the last of the supplies and the calves to the Arena.  Well, I did get chores done.  Then Dad offered to help me load the calves.  To bad things didn't go very well.  You see I was trying to load them from horse back and Dad was on foot.  There was one calf that wouldn't load and I reached down to smack it on the butt with my rope to get it loaded.  Then Dad's dog chased the calf (Mom can't stand that dog when it is around cattle... from now on it will be penned when we work them)  Dad yelled at the dog but not before the calf went the other way and hung up in the rope that was in my hand.  I was able to drop all the rope but one loop that got caught up around my middle and ring finger.  Dad laughed until I yelled I couldn't feel my hand.  Mom was some how aware and before Dad even tried to help, she was half way through the pasture to the pen from the house.  (She was in the kitchen getting the food for lunch together.  We have to feed everyone you know)  Mom said she could see it going wrong from the house.  To bad Dad didn't see it going wrong until it was to late ... He was the one closest that could get me help.  I think as he gets older he just doesn't pay as much attention to things.
So This is what it looks like when you almost amputate two fingers by having 250lbs pull a rope tight around them.  What surprised me was that my whole hand swelled up.

Mom got me to the house and made me take an anti-inflammatory, iced it and headed to the Emergency Room. We called Doctor Jeff on the way so he could meet us there.  (Yes, small town living has advantages ... Like having your doctor's cell number)  To be honest, when Mom got me to the house I almost pasted out. This is my first trip to the ER for anything other then my Breathing. There they made me move it and put pressure on it and took about 3 different X-Rays. While I was waiting for Doc to read my X-Rays, a lady came in to get a band aide. She had a paper cut and we laughed because her and I compared injuries... I won... No, she didn't come to the ER for that ... she works there... LOL
I got out of the ER and got to the clinic just in time.  Doc said nothing was broken but that I wasn't suppose to do anything at all today using that hand.  However, Mom let me tape it up after the swelling started to go down and I got to help a bit but not as much as I wanted to.  I had fun but it would have been better if my hand wasn't swollen and I could have done more.  Oh well, Tonight I am taking a hot bath to soak and I will be right as rain tomorrow and it won't affect Monday as long as I take it easy tomorrow ....

Glad it isn't any worse ... 250 lbs could have done a lot of damage!
