QUADS are born to Snickers

2/13/2013

Where to start?  Oh man, it has to be a picture first ... What could be cuter then a new baby lamb

How about that ... times 4???

Okay now to back up and tell you everything ... First the snow started moving in yesterday.  Mom and I had done everything we needed to be ready for the storm.  I had spent the day Vaccinating and found a bag on two of the Ewes.

As the snow fell Mom and I decided that, to be safe, we would pen the two ewes with bags in a stall just to keep them out of the weather and give them extra heat with a heat lamp and a good wind block.

Add in a bit of Hay for them to snack on and they were happy campers.
On the way to and from the barn last night Mom had a blast playing with Jethro and teaching him to catch snowflakes with his mouth. He ran everywhere with his head in the air and his mouth open ... After that he started chasing and eating snowballs.  What a goof!  The two were pretty silly to see.... Jethro prancing and Mom trying to taking pictures of the snow ...

After we thought everything was secure at the barn we headed in to see what supplies we would need for lambing.  Mom and I spent the evening getting a list together and things done so that all we had to do was get the pens ready and Make a trip to town to pick up a few last minutes things and we would be ready for lambing season to begin. Oh, you know it can't work that easy on the Straw Farm. Nothing ever does ... LOL
I went through my tub of stuff and made a list for Mom to pick up tomorrow.  Through the night Mom checked all the ewes.  Making sure everyone was safe and doing fine.  By 5am Mom was convinced nothing was going to happen and that we still had time.  Lambing was planned for the end of February and begining of March.
So we thought we had everything under control ...
Before Mom headed off to work she made me go check the Ewes one more time ... I was shocked to find this ...

I called Mom and she grabbed towels and headed out to help  (She ended up calling into work)   Mom set to fixing up a pen in the barn for Snickers and I went about doing the normal chores.  When the pen was set I helped Mom move Snickers and the two babies to the clean, dry, warm pen.

Mom took the babies and I put a halter on Snickers. She didn't want to move easy and She didn't even want to follow the babies but we got her there. As Mom worked to dry and warm the babies Snickers started showing signs of a third. I saw the first hoof of another one so Mom sent me to bring out a few more towels. On the way to the house I kept thinking Triplet names ... Huey, Dewey and Louie ... Larry, Curly, Mo ... You know the routine.
I gathered about 4 more towels, a snack for breakfast and the phone Rang ... Mom said She needed help and to hurry cause we were up to Quads and to just bring everything I could carry.  At first I thought Mom was kidding but she said it was no joke.  I grabbed every towel in the house and headed back to the barn where Mom was cleaning the last of the babies...

I was surprized at how the last two lambs born were bigger then the first two.  Snickers cleaned on each one but to be honest she just didn't have time to get each one completely cleaned and dry before the next one came.  With Mom cleaning and drying they tried hard to keep up.  When everything was said and done they have all been up and suckled a bit.  I called the Vet and explained the situation including how I Vaccinated yesterday and there were Quads and everything.  He said to make sure I stayed from behind the ewe.  I asked why and he laughted and said that if I kept standing there she might keep spitting babies out... LOL ... I love our Vet's sense of humor.   I laughed and then he said that there is no way a Ewe can raise 4 lambs without human help.  So after the first 24 hours we will have sheep shifts.
Picture
As you can see we have the pink team and the grey team.  One larger and one smaller on each team... Also we picked up something called First Arrival.  It is a paste that is to be given to them to help them out in getting all the vitamins and Mineral and antibodies they will needs since their Mom has to many to handle.  Tomorrow they will be given their paste and we will start with 6 hour shifts with each set of twins.  While away the set of twins will be in the house pen.

Question of the day: How many towels do you think it takes to bring a set of Quads into the world?  I will show you ... Yes Mom is doing Laundry again today ...  There is one blanket the rest is towels.

In the end I am thankful to the good Lord for each and every one of those Lambs.  That brings me to something else I am very thankful for ...and that is each of you.  Everyday I see hundreds of people have seen my blog and I know others are reading.  So I keep posting.  And sometimes things happen that show me people support me no matter how bad I mess up.
You see in all the excitement this morning, I had something come in the mail today that was just as big of news as the Quads and it reminded me how Blessed I am to have all of you.  There are people that read the blog and while they are silent most of the time, they too step up when it counts.  I can't tell you how very thankful I am for that.  I don't have permission to post on the blog about what came but I am sure that person knows what I am talking about.  This is my Thank you to you and I am really thankful for what you sent.  They will know who they are ... But if you need to know for sure it is you let me just say that I am thankful that their Father (God Rest His soul) loved horses as much as I do!.
