Okay so today was kind of wierd. Well, the day wasn't but Mom was. First I fooled Daisy the Duck. I kept her eggs warm all night and she took them back today. I even added some. From there started even more weird stuff. Remember that Baby bird that fell with the nest from the tree and it's other siblings died? Well, it is still with us. Mom has done alot of weird things in her day but today she topped herself. First, she worked this morning to try everything to get the real parents to step up and take care of the little thing. She googled it and found out that if you hang a basket in the tree with the baby birds in it the parents will come back to them and care for them like nothing happened.
So Mom being Mom had to try it ... She took a chair and her best basket and filled it with hay and the baby. She even made sure it looked natural. (Okay her words not mine ... As natural as a basket can look hanging in a tree I guess) Then she fussed the whole time because it wasn't working.... Can you see it??? Look in the center of the picture.
Does this help??? Yes, it is a basket in a tree. And I will tell you IT DOES NOT WORK. You just end up laughing at your Mother in her chair trying to get the dang thing back down and then she will make you climb on top of the trailer to help her get it back.
Mom then went back to the internet and found a recipe for baby bird food. It had Hamburger, dog food, Egg yoke, cottage cheese and I don't know what all in it. And you guessed it the little thing is eating just fine for Mom. I have to admit it is kind of cute but it will look much better when it gets the rest of it's feathers in.
Mom is calling it Miracle. She says that it is a name that can be a boy or a girl. When I asked her what was going to happen when it came time to teach it to find it's own food Mom smiled and Said "I will show it where the bird feeder is." I asked her what about teaching it to fly. She just looked at me and said "your room will do" She is nuts I tell you ... She has gone off the deep end and her brain is starting to dry up from the drought .... (okay maybe she isn't that bad yet... hehehehe) She is already attached to the little thing. Which isn't good. Bird Rehab fails 90-95% of the time. But you guys are figuring out Mom she doesn't care about the failure rate she says she will be in the other 5-10%. She keeps the little thing in the incubator and feeds it everytime it cries. She even took it to work with her and kept it in a basket nice and warm and fed it there too.
After Mom got home from work she started right back in with that whole project thing again. She made us measure and cut the wood and then she started putting things together. She has two pieces that look to be frames and then she had Dad cutting sheets of plywood with squares out of it. I think I am starting to figure things out. Take a look.....
I think my Ducks just might end up with a pretty nice set of runs under a light so that we can keep them safe. While I worked on everything with Mom I tried out the new playpen.... My Grey calls loved it and tomorrow I will check nice clean birds into the fair.
