Going Postal ....

1/25/2013

So day was a mail day.  Normally that isn't anything to post about but this time I need to ask a really big question.  First, you need to know that our small town post office is now reduced to half days Monday through Friday and closed weekends.  That is why Mom can only get there on certain days when she isn't at work.  We feel that makes people think we are slow to mail orders out but we are on a schedule and just don't see anyway to get around it.

Today while on our normal postal run, our really nice, part time, postmaster informed us that all the prices at our post office were going up AGAIN!  In the past since these hikes were a few cents here and there, we just ate the cost to make our customers happy.  This time things are going up by dollars not cents.

So what does that mean??  Well, it means that the boxes we use to normally mail out our reasonably priced bags of fiber now cost as much to mail as we sell them for!  So here is my question of the day to all of you.  Would you pay more to get it faster or would you pay less and be comfortable getting things a bit slower if you knew it was going to be slow to start with??  Either way we are having to consider raising prices to cover shipping costs and I really don't think it is fair but there isn't much anyone here on the farm can do about it.

Please let us know your thoughts.

I say just give customers the option! Pay more for faster is the general rule!

We've had to eat the rising cost of mailing, and of paper and ink to keep our newspaper subscribers. There does come a time, however, when you have to raise your prices. You're in business to make money, right? Check to see what other sellers of your products are charging and if they raise their prices soon.

I suggest giving the customers the option at the time of purchase. Sometimes I can spend the extra to get it right away, and sometimes, I can't.
