First Shearing.....

9/21/2011

First Just let me say I am sorry this is so late in posting.  It is Mom's bowling league night and on top of that we have typed this 3 times and the web keeps messing it up.  Anyway, Let's see if it takes this time.  Mom says we are going to save it each time we post a little bit and see if that helps.
Now, Back to Business!  Today was our first of what we hope to be many more shearing days.  We also met an awsome person and someone we would hope would become a life long friend.  His name is Danny Smith (AKA: the  Shearer)
Picture
He is really nice and he was kind to all the goats.  I like that.  He checked their feet and told me I was doing a "bang up job" in taking care of them all.  He did tell us they still have worms.  We called the vet and he has a different medication for the goats and we are picking it up in the morning.

After the goats were sheared they were so white and looked like brand new sheep.  Danny did mention that we might want to work on keeping them from getting hay in their fiber.  We skirted it  but Mom said to give her time before winter and she has an idea about that.  She says we will show you what we have planned for winter in another post.
Picture
The only one that seems to not enjoy the day was Dimmples.  She hid in the barrel and wouldn't come out for anything.  She just stood there Naked and yelled at Mom.  We were all laughing but Dimmples didn't seem to happy to be without her cloths.
Picture
When all the goats were done I loaded all the fleece into the Fleece Mobile and took them to the house.  Okay it really is just a wheel barrel but for today it was my fleece mobile.  LOL

After it was over Danny had to get going so we shook his hand, made sure he would return in the spring and said our good byes.  Then he asked if we had just a minute to see what he does in his spare time.  We said we did and as it turns out he is also a man of many talents.
Picture
Danny is also a wood worker.  He hand turns things on a lath.  He makes the best looking writing pens, (Mom got me one for Christmas)  Crochet hooks and buttons of all sizes....  He also makes Shawl pins.  They were really cool.  The pin part he makes on the lath and the circle part he hand makes from Cattle horns.  Each one is a one of a kind hand made item.  No two are alike.  I could post a picture of the Shawl pin that Mom got for Dad and Me to give her for Christmas and my Pen.  UuuuuMmmmm NO! I dont' think I will.   What I will do is post this picture instead ....
Picture
Isn't that really cool?  What is so special about this one?  Well, Mom thought we should do something special to mark our first shearing.  We didn't do a party and we didn't even have anyone out to watch.  It was just Mom, Danny and Me.  So We thought it would only be fitting to do another give away.  Up for grabs is this one of a kind, hand made Shawl pin.  If you don't keep it for yourself you can always give it as a gift.  To have a chance to win just leave me a note and let me know what you think of Danny and our quiet little shearing.....
(because we are so late getting this up we will draw for the shawl pin Thursday night at 7pm)

Poor Dimples! That cracked me up.

I think a low key first shearing was a good idea. AND so glad you found yourself such a talented shearer!

Awesome first shearing RJ! Finding a good shearer is such an important thing, finding such a talented one, pricess!
I like having a quiet shearing too, it's traumatic enough for the goats :)

Sometimes the best way to pass important milestones(like your first shearing!!!) in a low-key way so you can absorb all the details. Parties and guests are fun but the excitement can keep you from remembering the milestone you are celebrating. I also think it is awesome that you got to meet a man who cares for livestock and makes beautiful things with his hands. Did he feel like a kindred spirit?

Purlsandknit sorry but it was Tuesday morning and the time was set for 12 but he got here at 10:30 and I know you had to work ... We are on the list for Spring and I am thinking of having a small group out ... It will be better planned as his Mother will be over her cancer and his life will be back to normal by then.

Kara - He was a quiet man and really full of knowledge. I don't know about a kindred spirit but I know he is a humble, down to earth, Lord loving man with a big heart.

Karen - the shearing took about an hour and a half but Danny went slow and taught us as he went. And he only knicked a few of them and the knicks were very small.
