Fighting up a Storm

10/13/2012

Today started off normal for a Saturday.  I worked the sale barn and ended up buying a calf.  It rained most of the day and when I got home I wanted to ride and Dad said we could.  That is where it all went so wrong...
When Mom called, Dad and I were saddling up and Mom hit the roof.  Okay, she was in the car so she hit the car roof.  There are three things you need to know at this point. First, I didn't get to ride yesterday, second when I want to ride I want to ride and I don't care about anything else until I get to ride.  Third, Dad never tells me no when it comes to riding.  Mom on the other hand knows very well how to say no.
My side of the story is this.  To me riding in the rain is no big deal.  So the storms were heading this way.  They weren't here.  Besides I would have been done before they even got here.  Yes, it was muddy but What is the big deal ....
Mom's side ... it isn't safe.  If your boots will slide on the slick grass and mud so will a horses hooves.  And if you add the weight of a saddle and rider and kick it up to top speed the chances of the horse getting hurt increase.  If I want to do something unsafe and my father is stupid enough to join in then the two of you can go play in the thunder and lightening storms all you want but She will not allow us to endanger those horses one bit.
Okay I see her point but I wasn't going to ride him hard... Dad and I didn't even plan to race this time.  You have to understand my Dad when he agrees to do stuff like this with me.  It isn't that he doesn't think about being safe, it is just that he was raised in a time when horses were "expendible" as Mom calls it.  My Dad's Dad talks about a time when they would ride horses into the ground.  He even says that they killed more good horses then I will ever own.  It was a different time then.
Mom however thinks of the consiquences first.  She thinks of things like "How will  you feel if the horse breaks a leg and you have to put him down, just because you wanted to ride." or To Dad "What would you tell your son if he lost Ice all because you both wanted to ride and you know it isn't the smart thing to do?"  The truth is Dad and I never think anything can happen.  Mom knows it can if we don't think safety first.
In the end Mom won and Dad and I didn't ride.  It was a good thing too because the storms they said weren't going to get here until 7pm arrived about 30 minutes after this fight took place... I know, I know,  "Boy, you should always listen to your Mother!!" ....
Instead of riding Mom made Pizza and we watched a movie.  Mom cuddled with Jethro some.  You have to check out these pictures.  Remember, Jethro is only about 4 months old....

As a Mom, can I just sit back and smile? Your Mom will understand! (But I'm sorry you didn't get to ride and I'm really glad everyone is safe.)

Mom just laughed when I read this to her ... She said "she must have a teen!"
