Different Strokes for Different Folks

1/16/2013

So First I hope you all Liked Katie and her podcast as much as I do.  I really didn't think she would go on like she did but I am guessing she is as excited to do the Give Away and I am ... Anyway .... On to tonight's Post
Yesterday I touched on something that I never really thought about before.  How Country Kids differ from City Kids.  The first time I remember thinking about the differences was when a Guy from the Railroad company came to our property and I was out target shooting.... I think I was about 9 or 10 but he freaked out when he saw a kid with a gun and Mom couldn't stop laughing... He Dove behind our propane tank.  Okay, so some City folk don't know what a propane tank looks like or they just don't think about what is in it when they are reactiing ...LOL ... Either way it is a pretty funny story.
Well, tonight I am going to show you a few things I think are not things you would see in a city home ... (Correct me if I am wrong ... Please)  Let us start with the obvious ... I know that you all know we have a pen in the kitchen for livestock and I am sure not to many people have those .. Next up
Picture
This is a bucket of chicken scratch (country word for bird feed) that Mom uses to fill her bird feeders. Nothing odd there ... Until ...
Picture
Put a "bucket bowl" on it and it becomes Jethro's feed dish ... Next we have
Picture
These are just what you think they are ... Baby Bottles ... For Calves.  They hold 2 pints each and that is what each calf drinks twice a day ... sometimes three times a day.  Next we have this by our back door
Picture
Those ropes and halters are the very same ones that we use in emergencies that come up on the farm.  (Oh and if you look really close you can see Mom's shearing hat ... Pink with Flowers... It keeps her neck from getting sunburnt) I am sure the next item is no surprise ...
Picture
This tub sits by our frig and is our go to kit for livestock medical supplies we also keep the sheep shearing sheers there. This next item you probably have seen for other things just not what you would think of in this case....
Picture
This is the measuring tape that is on our frig at all times when it is not in use.  It is a very special tape as it measures a horses height and weight.  Yes, I said height and weight. Here is how it works.  On one side you have this...
Picture
You put the end of the tape under your toe and hold it up to the horse at it's shoulder and this tape tells you how many hands tall your horse is.  (Hands is the unit used to measure the height of horses)  On the other side you see this...
Picture
This is the side of the tape used to measure a horses weight.  You just wrap it around you horse's belly right behind the front legs and then read it like a normal tape measure...
There are also things in our deco that I am sure not to many city folks have. Well, they have them but just not in our Style ...Check out this ...
Picture
Most people have hat racks but they are mostly for ball caps and not cowboy hat.  This next item I am not sure anyone has this in their home but us...
Picture
If you can't guess what that is ... It is a waste paper basket made by my Great, Great Grandmother out of Egg Cartons... (Nope, No joke!!  True story) ...  You know, now that I think of it there are some activities that go on in our kitchen that never would happen in city homes ... Like my roping practice.  But did you also know that I target shot my soft air pellet gun in the kitchen as well???
Picture
Sometime I will have to let you in on some of the stories about Mom's adjustment to country life... She didn't grow up country.  She moved out here the same time I did ... Only she was older and had different issues.... LOL   What is weird about your house???

I found this post interesting. My favorite was the horse measuring tape, had no clue that was how you measured and weighed a horse. I grew up in the city but live in the country, (not on a farm though). I can't really think of anything weird about our house except maybe our 2 cats and 3 dogs can go anywhere in the house they want.
