Chickens aren't all that smart

9/28/2011

Sometimes I wonder what Chickens think.  Or do they?  I put the babies out in the community coop in a separate area where they had food and water.  The bigger birds also had food and water and a big area of the coop along with the whole outside world. So why is it that the big ones got in with the little ones ate all their food, drank all their water and smashed two of them to death???  And for what??  They had the same water and feed in their area of the coop and much more. Sometimes I just can't figure those birds out ... Any help with that one?

:( I'm sorry. My experience with chickens is that they are curious. The will explore the new stuff with gusto even if it is the same stuff they already have.

The term "pecking order" applies to chickens also. They will do almost anything, including kill any chicken smaller than they are or slightly weaker than they are, to maintain their supremacy in the group. Sorry, though, for the two little chicks. I guess they weren't quite ready to join the bigger flock. I hope the other chicks are all ok.

Kara - I just can't believe they got in the tub with the little ones

Susan - they didn't "join" the bigger flock they were in a separate container that is off by it's self.

The only thing I don't understand is that I have done this since I was three and I have never had this happen before so I am guessing that once in 10 yrs isn't such a bad ratio.
