Busy Day

10/15/2012

Can anyone explain to me why Mom insists that her day off be so busy.  First thing this morning while I did  my school work Mom baked up so of those mini cinnamon rolls.  Then she moved on to browning about 5 lbs of ground deer so we will have it for the winter.  Mom can cook on the wood burning stove but she says that back in the day when they were used for cooking meals people often got sick because the Meat didn't cook all the way through.  So Mom precooks the meat and then when we need to make stew or chili we just add everything to the pot and use the precooked meat from the freezer.  It all tastes the same if you ask me.  She also made sausage-bisquits.  They are for Breakfasts in the winter.  Some times Dad and I microwave them just because but Mom cooks them over the wood burning stove for breakfasts on the days we don't have electric.
Anyway, after she got all the cooking she wanted done and I got my school work done it was time to trim everythings feet.  All the sheep, goats and alpacas have lovely looking toe nails now...  I also took this time to put the 5 jackets Mom made for the sheep on the Cotswold.  Mom actually made them for the goats but they turned out to big so the Cotswold will be the first jacketed.  Mom has promised to make some more a few at a time and of different sizes for me.
Even the mail coming was something to keep use busy today.  You see we got a special package for Operation SSS.  Thanks to KarenGTM on Plurk we got this to add to our stash ...

After Lunch Dad and I ran to the lumber yard and picked up some stuff to fix up the old rabbit cage so that Coco Puff can actually go out more. We have had this old cage for along time and we got it used from someone else.

As you can see it got new braces all the way around it and a new roof.  Then Mom replaced the missing hinge pin and she put a half floor in it that can be removed for cleaning.  She also put together an old chicken nesting box so that Coco Puff will have a place to get out of the weather.  For right now Mom says he will stay inside at night because she says the new/old hutch needs a new latch.
After we got Coco settled into his new/old hutch Dad and I set out to bring home more fire wood while Mom mowed the yard for the last time before she put away the lawnmower and tiller for the winter.  Yes, I took time to till the garden spot one more time this year too... Next spring we are planning to till it a few more times before planting veggies in it.
You would think at this point we would be done for the day.  Not here.  Dad and I took time to hit the roping pen for the first time since Dad got bucked off.  Mom had baked a ham for dinner so after we ate Mom did up the dishes from all the cooking she did this morning and then we decorated for fall.

That sounds like a really nice, happy, busy day with all kinds of good things being cooked in your kitchen, I can smell your mom's cooking from here. Mmmm! :-)

I'm new to sheep and need to trim some hooves. Any advice? What tools do you use? I'd also love to hear more about the sheep/goat blankets.
Thanks!

To trim hooves I use Garden pruning shears. They work the best. Also you will need a hoof pick with a brush on the back side. Clean the hooves as best you can and then just trim off the outer edges of the hooves. Make sure to check them each month and trim as needed. As for the blankets check out tonights blog ....
