Has anyone noticed that there is something about Holiday Groceries that just make it more fun to shop. Okay maybe not fun but special. Today Mom let me go with her to do the holiday Grocery Shopping. Normally I don't go to the grocery store with her, she just calls and asks if Dad and I want to add anything to the list. But Holiday shopping is different. We sit down and make a list and set a date. Then I get to go with Mom to get everything. It is kind of wierd how something that is done all the time can turn into an event and even a tradition this time of year. What do you do that is normal but at the holidays seem so special?? I want to hear about it.
Today was both good and not so good. It was in no way bad so I won't even say that. First for the good. I had a great time with everyone on my 4-H record book trip. We went to Tulsa and ate at Incredible Pizza and then went skating at the outside rink. We all had fun and wore ourselves out.
Then on the home front .... The horse shoer came today. All the horses got a trim, even Angel. Now for the not so good. The shoer found an abscess on Angel's left back hoof. It is common in horses that aren't cared for but not common at our house. Angel is such a good girl not only did she stand and let him tend to her hooves with no fuss but she also let him drain it and clean it up. She didn't even move. In some ways that isn't all that good because it means she can take more pain then she should and not show signs. All in all with the abscess draining and us keeping it clean she is going to be fine. We will just have to take extra care and watch her from now on because she won't show pain if she is hurt as much as other horses would.
Nothing really exciting happened today until I went to do chores tonight. That is when I found that one of my Black Indie Call ducks had just curled up and went to sleep. Only to never wake up again. I don't know what happened for sure but Mom came up with a way to provide extra wind block for the north wind. We hope that will keep it from happening again. Tomorrow we will cover the north side of the duck runs with Wood. They already have a heat lamp in there and if it was cold it should have moved inside but it was in the 40's and 50's today so it should have been fine. I don't understand why this happened but I hope Mom's idea helps.
Well, Yesterday was great but not at all what I had planned. Mom worked while Dad and I went to a rodeo... I did really well and even won a new headstall for Ice. The only thing that didn't go as planned is that it took all day. And by that I mean from 11:30am (we had to leave at 10am Just to get there on time) to 10pm (we didn't get home until after 11pm) Mom had to do everything at home by herself. She worked all day ... Did some Christmas shopping and then when it started to get dark she did all the Chores. I can't believe it took so long and I know Mom hates having to do the chores on the days that she works and Dad and I are off. (to tell the truth I know it isn't fair for her to have to) Anyway, Good day for me and Dad not so good for Mom ... Did I mention Mom has been sick for about 4 days now ... She hasn't slowed down any but She has a cough and a head ache that she says when she coughs makes her head feel like it will explode....
What do elves wear on their shoes??
Today is going really good. Let me show you why ...
That is Ice teaching Angel to lead. It is her first real work out up until now I have just been walking her. It worked out great ....
Today I did all the normal stuff. I did my school work, chores and even had my poultry club meeting. I made sure I had time to ride Ice and work Angel as well. To bad that makes for a really slow blog day. I wish I had something great to report but for now we will all have to settle for a report that Buddy the Dog is fine from his night of Chocolate stealing. I am happy with that ....
Out of the 365 days in the year, what day is Christmas on??
Okay, so today was quiet for the most part. I had schoolwork and chores and the normal stuff. That is until I went to get ready for bed. Like all growing boys I grabbed a snack and put a movie on in my room. To bad I set the snack down while I did that because Buddy, My 14 yr old Manchester Terrier, ate it. It really wouldn't have been a big deal except it was one of the Peanut Butter bars we made on Monday. They are great but they have a chocolate top on them.
Mom looked for her Ipecac but we were out. Mom called the vet and he said to make him throw up by putting salt in the back of his throat. All that got Mom was bit. Buddy is old and grumpy as it is and he hates to be messed with but Mom didn't stop. She called Ms. Karen. She didn't have any Ipecac either but she was fast on her toes and found out that hydrogen peroxide will make a dog throw up.
The first time Mom tried to get it down Buddy it didn't really go so well and she only got about half in him. She attemped again and it was a success. I walked Buddy outside and within minutes he was throwing it all up. Mom Cleaned up the mess in the yard and I took Buddy inside. For the record you give 5cc per 10 lbs of Dog. We are watching him close but I learned not to leave my snacks for even a minute ...
Lucky Dog ... With just a belly ache. Thank the Lord!
I know every time I mention Angel you think of the horse that we are working to get back to being healthy. Well, this is kind of about her, but to be honest, in my world there turns out to be more then one kind of angel. I know you can't see their wings but I know they are around and I can prove it. I don't know who or how but today I got something in the mail that tells me there is real angels on earth. At first it looks like an ordinary letter ...
When I opened it up, I found that someone had purchased $100.00 worth of feed at the local feed store for Angel. I called the feed store and was told they would just mix it up whenever we wanted it and that a credit would be on our acct until we use it all up. I know, with everything that my family has decided with the business in the last week, that this is a real God Wink for us. Whoever you are know that you are a real blessing to my whole family and we will keep you in our Prayers always and we want to Thank you from the bottem of our hearts. Merry Christmas to you and may you be as blessed as you have blessed us.
I almost forgot the Christmas question:
Who was Gideon in "One Magic Christmas"?
At our house we have a tradition of Cookie Day... It is an entire day of baking and making. We bake alot of cookies:
Peanut Butter Cookies
Then we make:
Peanut Butter Bars
I love this day ... I am the official Taste tester... We always have problems with one or two batches... Like this year the No bakes didn't set up and one batch of Chocolate Chip cookies were to hard and fell apart. Oh well, I can eat them ... LOL Mom said she might bake the no bakes to see if it helps.
Mom's popcorn it the best ... Dad eats most of it until Mom smacks his hands.... LOL
We sack each kind of cookie in a ziplock and then we take all those plastic containers we get fruits and veggies in and turn them into cookie containers. First we line them with tissue paper. Then we put in the many ziplocks of cookies and seal them back up.
After that we have a list that we take them to.
The Fire Dept
The post office
The Garbage Men
The post office
The neighbor that clears our drive and helps when the weather get so bad that Dad doesn't make it home
Dad's cousin down the road that helps when Dad doesn't make it home bacause of the weather
The County workers who take care of the county roads
The Shelter where Mom works
The sale Barn that Dad and I work on Saturdays
Tomorrow will be delivery day if we get them all done ... LOL
And just so everyone knows ANGEL was out again today and is doing great.
What does Alvin what for Christmas???
Today was a busy day on the farm. First I helped Dad try and get the Christmas lights up. (we still don't have that done and Christmas is coming) Then we went and got the hay for the winter. We had our small square bales but the round bales had to be brought home from about 2 miles away. We can only move one bale at a time so it took awhile. While Dad finished up bringing home the hay I took time to work with Angel. Out of everything that happened today working her was the best. After she walked with me to bring up the calves I turned her out in the pasture for a few hours and guess what ... She ate hay and grazed but she would lift her head and didn't over eat any one thing. I only left her out for about two hours but it is a good sign. It means that she is no longer over eating in fear of not having a next meal. To me that is my best win of the day.
After Dad finished up bringing in the hay we worked the cattle. Jamie has worms and isn't doing to well in the cold so we thought we would take care of all of them and get the worms under control now.
Finally my Welch Round Up Club Banquet was today. I won the Steer Stopping buckle and then in top honors I also got All-Round. I had hoped Ice would win the Roping horse of the year but it was by Vote and the other person I was up against was local so everyone knew him and voted for him. Oh Well, That is how it goes sometimes. I got some really cool stuff for my awards and for participation. First my new Steer Stopping Buckle ....
Then for All-Round I won Ice a new horse blanket embroidered With our title and everything ...
Then just for participation I got a new set of stirrups, a new bucket and a Jacket.
This is what the back of the jacket looks like... I like it ...
Dad also got the tie down roping buckle so we were both winners ...
