There is another little thing that I got done and that is my egg sign up...Check it out you can see it from up the road...
Well those are my little things for today ...
|Barn on the Web||
Today I only have a few little things to let you know. First, Check out what came in the mail today ...
Can't tell what it is? Let me help you out ....
It is Juneau's Papers ... His registration papers....Yaahhhhh!
There is another little thing that I got done and that is my egg sign up...Check it out you can see it from up the road...
There was one more little thing that I had to deal with today and it is this....
Her name is Dolly and She is a little thin but she can be filled out with a bottle or two a day. I think we are going to keep her to keep with our herd we are building....
Well those are my little things for today ...
Well, it is official ... Cap is our Sponsored QT Dog. He has his appointment the 17th to be fixed and get his rabies shot. He no longer has to wear his cone and he is up and going without messing with his stitches. Mom is going to visit him Monday and get lots of pictures to bring back. This is him before when he had his bad leg.
One other thing happened that everyone might be interested in.... I got my new Shears in the mail today. Yup you guessed it. Since we had issues with getting the shearer here when we needed him Mom came up with a plan. It involved new shears, me and Billy. After talking to Billy he has agreed to teach me to shear. So in the next week I will have a post about how it went. Mom even bought me the Angora 20 tooth comb to go with it.... All I have to do is go pick it up.
Okay so I have a few things I want to throw out here tonight. First is that I want to know if the QTs would be interested in sponsoring a dog at my Mom's shelter. You see there is this new program where businesses can sponsor an animal adoption and there is this one little guy that has had it really rough. When Cap (Short for Captain) first came to the shelter he wouldn't us on of his front legs. When ever he would be picked up, if you didn't pick him up a certain way he would yelp in pain. Mom found a Vet Tech progarm at a Community college about 30 minutes away that was interested in x-raying his leg for free so they could get the experience. What they found was an old untreated wound that had caused nerve damage. Anyway, as of Yesterday his leg had to be amputated. He came through the surgery great and is doing well. Mom however is worried that she put him through all of this for nothing because if she can't find this newly three legged dog a home his fate is the same as any other. Well, I was thinking whenever you sponsor an adoption of an animal at the shelter the business owner gets to pick the animal. That business then pays the fee for the spay or nueter. Well, since Mom works there I also know that through the spay and neuter van she can get him fixed for 35.00 and his Rabies shot that is required for 5.00. I know we are all about fiber but If this business is putting our name out into the community is this a way that we should look into? The scholarship will be presented in early May but I just thought we as a group might want to try this. What do you all think? Am I trying to grow to fast by putting our name out there on more then one thing at a time?? Please leave me a comment here or Email me your thoughts at email@example.com
Well, enough with the serious stuff ... My second thought is Holy Cow ... Check this out ... I want one she is so cute .... LOL
If it won't play right here you can check it out on the web Here
Okay so I have to make this quick tonight. Mom is saying Dad and I are grumpy so she is shutting the house down at 9pm sharp. I have to be showered and in bed by then. I tried telling her I had something important to tell everyone and she just gave me that I don't care Mom look. So here is goes.....
I got an email and it says that Juneau the alpaca is now registered and will have the cert. printed and mailed in one week. Now to get my shower and get to bed before that vein on Mom's forehead gets any big
I got a comment that made me think today. That is a good thing and it went like this ...
Hi, RJ. I haven't commented in a long time, but I am reading. Sounds like things are busy at the Straw Farm. I think you are doing great with this blog thing. Are the iris bulbs I sent you showing any sings of life. If they are duds, I will definitely send you more this fall. I'm determined to get something from NY growing and thriving in OK.
I've been wondering if you are interested in professional sports? I know you love rodeo, but how about baseball or football or basketball?
And you know what Ms. Adelaide is right I don't talk about sports much but first things first. Yes, Ma'am the Iris are coming up and I was going to try and get you a picture of them today but I just didn't get there. They aren't blooming yet but the are showing alot of leaf.
Anyway, back to sports. When I was younger I was involved in sports other then Rodeo. I played flag football on a youth team when I was in second or third grade. I played for two years. That however was second to my Ice Skating. Yes, for those that didn't know I used to figure skate and did pretty well at it. The only jump I never landed was my axel. I competed in State Games of American and brought back a Silver for the State of Oklahoma and I even did a program where I roped a roping dummy on the Ice. I even skated pairs for a time too. I have skated at camps with many great skaters from Jonathan Hunt (he taught me to lift the girls) there was also Ann Patrice McDonough, Jared Guzman (he taught me to use technical stuff to improve my training) and Ryan Jahnke (I skated in the story of Christ's life with him to raise food for the local food bank). My skating even let me meet 2006 Miss America Jennifer Berry.
To answer Ms. Adelaide's question I used to watch professional Ice skating and my Dad is a fan of the Dallas Cowboys so I used to watch them play football from time to time. To tell the truth though that was just so that Dad and I could hang out. It was never about the sports. Any team could have been playing really. Mom used to make a big deal over a few games a year and we would have a pot of chili and all the chips and dip we could eat.
As I have gotten older and we have moved to the country we don't get TV. There is no cable where we are and Mom and Dad have discuss satelite but who has time and if we have to pay for it, it would be a waste of money if we don't use it. Anyway, that put an end to our football watching. Now the big deal around our house is the OSU/OU college ball games. Mom still makes us chili and we still veg out on chips and dip. Other then that I am not to hot on professional sports and I really am not into playing them either. I am to short for Basketball, to Small for football, I hate hockey and would rather not play baseball. So all that really leaves is Rodeo. If we had TV that is the one thing I would watch....
Ms. Adelaide I hope that answers your question. And if anyone else wants to know anything, leave me a comment or email me and I might just write a blog post just for you. Just like I did for Ms. Adelaide.
First let me say I am so sorry. I am running behind and I have not gotten to blog every day. I feel like that is just not acceptable. Please understand that not only am I trying to keep up and build my college fund (which sometimes feels like it is turning into a full time job) but I have school, 4-H and a MOM! Have you ever tried to do things late in the evening with time running out and Mom getting on to you to "get into bed! 5AM comes to early for late nights around here!" I will also tell you that "get to bed" doesn't mean just strip down to the BVDs and hop in bed. Around here there are very few days you can skip a shower before bed or you will have things you don't want in your bed, in your bed.
Anyway, for some reason every time the time changes I start running behind. It seems like there is more day light in the evening but I am not getting things done. (I will tell you that it might be because I rope every evening with Dad now since it doesn't get dark as early) Maybe My roping is the problem but then again I have other problems that other bloggers don't have. My biggest problem is that I use a cameraMOM instead of a cameraMAN when I want to do a video cast (which I wanted to do once a week). There are both good and bad things about using a cameraMom. First cameramom is cheaper then a cameramen. Then there is the whole cameramom has a job so you have to do it when she has time. Unlike cameraman who will do it whenever you pay them to. Another issue is the equipement. Cameramom uses a flip and helps you fight with the computer to make it work. Cameraman has fancy equipement that works with anything but that just made his fee go up... Well, as you can see at this time in my life (14 years old) I can't afford anything fancier then CameraMom so I will have to be happy with whatever video casts I get. Even if they aren't as often as I want them to be.
There are other things that are getting in the way of my Blog time as well. Things I can't control. (These things come from Mom and even Dad admits he can't control her) I bet you forgot the whole spring cleaning kick Mom was on. Well, she hasn't and that means I haven't either. She isn't done yet and that has added issues to my life as well. This is a before picture of an area of my room I had to clean up just today or I couldn't do anything else.
And here is the after shot. Like I said I had to do this area just today. (Thanks to Ms. Karen ... LOL)
I do think it looks better but don't tell Mom she would tell me "See I told you it would."
Anyway, there have been other things going on that have kept me from blogging this last week as well. I know most of you remember Pansy and Petuina the two shetland bottle ewes I got. Well, Pansy (the littlest one) has had a few issues with bloating. Mom, Dad and I have been taking turns getting up many times in the middle of the night over the last few nights and keeping watch. We have gotten to a point were we add Baking Soda to everyone of her bottles and she does okay. To tell you the truth we had to try like 4 other remedies before we found one that worked for her. It is enough to drive a person crazy with fear.
Now let us add to that Mom's and mine's allergies ... (Okay is Mine's a word? Any teachers what to correct that for me? Not making sense right now... Sorry) With Spring comes Mom's love of flowers and gardening. Another problem is that her and I both have really bad allergies. Mine leads to asthma and Mom's leads to migraines. The bad part is that Mom had to mow today and everything is in bloom... Check out the Red Buds. Look really close and you will see a bee in the picture...
Oh and check out the wild plum trees ... They make the air outside smell so great but after awhile it will make you sick because it gets really stout smelling. They look snow covered at times but we didn't plant them so we just have to deal with them... and the wild plums make great jelly.
And lets not forget the flowers in full bloom too ... We have a whole fence row of them ... great to look at but baaaadddd for the allergies. (get it bbbaaddd like a lamb ... LOL Okay I am not funny sorry.)
Well, I guess everyone now knows what has been keeping me busy this week and I hope to be better about blogging daily from now on.... Oh, did I mention that is issues with the shearer, Billy's lambs do nothing but chase the big lambs and the alpaca, Angel went to her first Rodeo and did really good, And Mom's shelter is offically a 501 (c)3 (tax deductable) and on petfinder now??? Oh I guess I will have to save all that for another blog post or people are going to quit reading because it is to long ... LOL! One final thing. Mom is trying to figure out how to make our propane tank look like a sheep ... She saw one done as a pig and thought it was just to cute and she has this idea ours needs to look like a sheep. Here is a picture of it ... Any ideas how to do that??? It is a large 500 gallon tank.
Oh and we are making a new Fresh Egg sign for the front driveway too ...
Okay really I am stopping now .... LOL
As everyone knows it had done nothing but rain for about a week now. That means I have been cocked up in this house for about a week. Yes, I spent alot of time on school work and I have raised both my science and my math to 77s so they are coming up slow but they are coming up. Other then that I have just had time to think.
What did I think about??? Glad you asked.... Well ... I am thinking about A Fiber Christmas in July Fiber Festival. As you all know it will be my first anything. As in anything I mean me presenting my business anywhere but here. It is my Debut to the fiber world I guess. The thing is that I still haven't gotten my roving and yarn back from the mill. So I have no idea how much of anything I will have to sell. What if I have nothing to put on my table in my booth? I know I will have the SouthDown products. But what if that is all I have??? Well, as you can see I am worried about it again.
Now, for those that read about my Mom you know she would get tired of hearing about it and she would come up with a plan. Mom is just that way. She is the kind of person who will think on something and come up with a plan ... She always can find a solution. Dad on the other hand is just the opposite. If there is a problem it just won't work and he drops it. Anyway, If you said Mom had a plan you would be half right. She went to work finding me something little that I could make and have for the table. That's right she came up with the stitchmarkers. At least I will have those and a chance to get my name out there.
Here is where the Debut begins.... I took Mom's idea one step further. You see it is great that I should have some product and the stitchmarkers but I wanted something to make me stand out and Mom had just the thing but she doesn't know it (and at this point she isn't sure it is something that people would like) So I talked her into posting her one of a kind, available only through RJ's QTs ... Eggs. These aren't just eggs though. These are special eggs. You can't eat them but you can look at them.... They are made of real egg shells and they can be made in many colors or natural. Standing on a base of wood when you look inside you will see one of two things, a sheep with a lamb by her side or a goat. Mom hasn't been able to locate babies to the goats or she would have babies in with those too.
I can't get the picture to come out really good because the lamb's head is also white and it blends into the Mom's hip. Here are some she has made in the past check them out....
For the record that is really little rocks in that egg ...
So here is the deal .... They will come natural or in your favorite color and you can choose Goats or Sheep and if you get a sheep you can choose to have a lamb or not with it. They will cost $15.00 and that includes shipping and handling. Mom even has three glitter colored paints, if anyone wants their egg dusted with rose, blue or green bling... Mom says if anyone is interested she should be able to get them done in time for Easter if she doesn't have to many orders ... You can just email Mom Here and she will make a link on the Farm page as well.
And this part is just for KarenGTM ... She thought that the secret under my hat was my haircut so here it is ... Mom is just happy to be able to see my eyes again. The picture is a bit blurry because it was taken with a cell phone but you can see that I got it all cut off....
Okay so as everyone knows I was bottle raising two of Billy's ewes to that I could keep one and when he graduates College return her to him so that he will have his own line back should he ever want it. Well, tonight I was suppose to return both lambs and we were suppose to talk to the guy and get to work out which one I could keep and which one he wanted back.
After Mom got home from work we loaded up the two lambs and headed to Billy's house. Which is where we were suppose to meet. When we got there the guy looked them over and said either one was fine with him and that I could pick which one I wanted. That meant that he didn't see champion ewes in either of them so he didn't really care which one I took. At that point Mom jumped into the conversation. She just blurted out "What would it take to keep both?" She was told a really good price and Mom said "Sold, Load them up, we are taking them home." Billy and the guy just laughed and asked what took her so long? Mom said she didn't want to be the one to stand in the way of his champion if we had raised one. On the way home Mom made one more statement that was funny. She said, "I am changing my lamb's name to Turtle" After we got to talking Mom told me that this way if I can't part with Fudgie I will still have Turtle to give Billy when he graduates.
Oh and yes it is still raining ... It is suppose to until sometime tomorrow I think. So my whole day I did school work. I still can't get those Cs to come up ...
I am so tired of the rain and all I did again today was school work and clean up after lambs and goats. The lambs and Rabbit are on schedule and take bottles at 9 and 3 am and pm every day. Other then that there really isn't anything to tell you... Oh there is one piece of news. Juneau's DNA card that I sent to the registry has sent it to the lab. I got an email from them letting us know that yesterday.
Anyway With any luck I will do a video cast in the next day or so. It is hard to get you in the action when all it has been around here is chores and schoolwork ... Sorry
Today was very wet and rainy. That means there was nothing to do but school work. I had either tests or quizes in every class. I have no idea how that worked out but it did. Mom is always great about giving me break and today I did okay. I didn't get my Math test done but I got 3 scores in the 80s but in Science I got like a 75. I have no idea why I just don't get Math and Science. I have to get my grade up to at least an 80 before the end of the year or
