A little help please ...

4/5/2013

So Last night after I went to bed Jethro and Hank started going nuts.  They were barking and carrying on.  So I went to see what was happening.  I found a Racoon in our yard.  Mom called off the dogs while I went for the Gun.  I know, I know, why not give the fellow a chance and leave him be?  First, Coons eat chickens and ducks and will not stop killing them until they are all gone.  Second Rabies.  I know that most people will never have a rabies scare or even encounter any animal that were ever exposed to Rabies but on the farm we are exposed.
Oh don't get me wrong everything we have that can be vaccinated is vaccinated for it.  From the cats and dogs to the horses.  So why do we worry about it?  Well, they say even with the vaccination animals can still get rabies but if it cuts their chances hey, we are all for that.  Also look at Mom and the line of work she is in.  Last nights coon was just the beginning.
You see, today I ended up hanging out with Mom at work most of the day ... Who by the way had a bad day.  You see there was this cat and it bit someone.  So the cat, who appeared sick but okay, was quarentined.  Last night some time after Mom left the shelter it passed away.  That means it now has to be tested and if it comes back positive the person it bit will have to take shots too.  Mom is upset as she takes everything personal.  (The lose of life is the one thing she takes the most personal) Anyway, what I am getting at is that my day was ruled by Rabies so if you have a pet get it vaccinated and don't mess around with animals you don't know ... By the way my horses go for boosters next Tuesday ... Not taking any chances here.
Finally when we got home I got the last of the shetland lambs out of the barn for their first day in the sun.  (Up until now it has been raining)  I did get a couple of shots with Mom's phone because the old camera we use is just that Old and it is starting to act up ... We have had it for about 7 yrs now and it has just passed it's prime I guess.  So Mom has decided that a new camera is in order.  She says to ask all of you for suggestions on a camera Priced no more then $200.00 but it not only has to have good quality but it has to be able to take action shot to get the lambs jumping about and me on my horse roping.  And I say it can't be one of those, slow, hold that pose forever before Mom gets the shot cameras, either...
So in closing enjoy these not so great phone camera shots of the Shetlands first day out.  The first shot is the only shot the camera worked for ... to bad you really can't see the babies.

Hugs for your mom. Let's hope that test comes back negative. Your baby lambs are all so cute!

I hope the test is negative for the person bit. Very hard for a loss. Especially so innocent. We get racoons too as well as fox and a few other "carrying" animals. I wish the fox were more tame though. They really are cute.
As for a camera... look at a Canon. I wont give a specific model but they are all good. If you can get a DSLR type. Any Canon is very good. Also before buying new look at the pawn shops... then check the sales papers. Not sure what large chain stores are close to you guys but some great sales at Best Buy right now. They also have an "outlet" from their online site. You can get a model that is a bit older for very cheap. Just check operating system needed and any updates. I just had to update software for mine since we got a new computer the end of last year. Finally figured it out and my pics are again downloaded.
My Canon is an SX110is and also does video. If you can find it or the next model up you can probably get one for less than $200-. I paid $430- when it was new on sale. My birthday gift a few years ago. Never have had an issue with it. Good Luck on the animals being okay. The babies are cute as all babies are...
Be careful out there too. You are right about rabies.
